PM boasts about Jamaica’s economy

Thursday Prime Minister, PJ Patterson painted a glowing picture of Jamaica's economic prospects as he gave an address at the Jamaica Business and Investment Forum in Kingston.

According to Mr. Patterson, the economy was in an expansion mode and business opportunities would soon abound for local and foreign investors.

He said his government was well underway to balancing the budget.

According to Mr. Patterson, large foreign exchange reserves had allowed the country to withstand the effect of several natural disasters and high oil prices last year.

Mr. Patterson boasted that his government's tight fiscal policies were responsible for the country experiencing the longest period of stability in several decades.

It is important that farmers have access to the necessary resources to be productive. Otherwise, it will only be guaranteeing poverty.

Quoting from a 2002 World Bank report, Senator Munroe said only nine per cent of all agricultural lands on the island had access to irrigation. He told the committee that the same report showed that there were 12 tractors for every 1,000 agricultural workers, while in Trinidad, there were 55 tractors for every 1,000 agricultural workers.

Security of Jamaican workforce raises concern

WITH POLICE statistics showing that nearly three quarters of those murdered last year were employed people, the Jamaica Employers Federation (JEF) and the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions (JCTU) are bemoaning the impact this will have on the productivity of the workforce.

Of the 1674 people murdered last year, 1125 of them were employed persons, the majority being labourers. Some 397 of them were murdered, followed by 64 taxi-operators and 59 farmers. Twenty-seven entrepreneurs were also killed, six managers and three medical doctors.

President of the the JCTU Senator Dwight Nelson says crime is depleting the country's productive capacity and it demoralises workers.

"One of the issues that is of prime concern to the workforce is the whole question of security. Security in going to and leaving the workplace, particularly those workers who have to work on late shifts, and I know this is disconcerting to the workforce, it is certainly disconcerting to the employer in terms of cost in providing security. Clearly, this is diverting from the productive capacity of the country," he says.

PRODUCTIVITY BEING UNDERMINED
Executive Director of JEF, Jacqueline Coke-Lloyd, agrees that Jamaica's productivity is being undermined by crime and she says it may result in an early lockdown of Jamaica's businesses.

"There are some businesses looking at whether they can continue to open as late as they are opening because some workers, some don't turn up to work and some don't [because of] fear. The buses stop running after a particular time and because of where they have to journey or get in and out of a particular community on a particular route. Those are issues for many of the employees," she says.

She says the cost of safety is driving up production costs for many businesses because many organisations have to employ security and provide transportation for their employees to get to and from work safely.

"It all boils down to the level of confidence that we have and that creates another problem in how businesses sustain themselves and how they continue to operate," she says.

The fears for employees' safety have triggered lobbies in the past for more to be done.

Senator Nelson notes that trade unions have always made it their point of duty to ensure employers protect their workers from criminal elements.

"Where workers have to travel in dangerous or hazardous areas we have always sought to agree with the employer that the workers be provided with transportation. Safety and public transportation cannot be guaranteed as is constantly shown," he says.

The JCTU in regard to the increase in murder has sought to improve its advocacy in this area. Trade Unions, he says, will ensure that employers protect workers who leave early in the mornings and late evenings.

I alwayed beleive that the Tractor may not be the solution... Rather tje current large design may not be ideal for the hilly stony small farmer.. A small lighter cultivator/ plow/ planting machine. Ive seen them used in Asia.. And a few not enough in Jamaica....

PJ he did a good job. You have any idea how hard it is to run a country
with struggling economy. Simular to a person with large family they
of to becarefull when make choices on who get more clothe and shoes.
I will still give him the thumbs up for his work.

That is the technology I have been pushing for the hill farmers for all these years. Where ere you?
I even had samples with catepillar tracks instead of wheels,andalso adopted that they can plow on very steep terrraine,without loosing oil pressure and destroying the engines like the ones that Mr Seaga introduced from Italy.

yes!! give your personal view as a (former) farmer noh??
I would specially like to know the experience of the hill side farmers.
The reason is that the majority of Jamaica's cultivable lands are hilly,and ofcourse I am also intrested in introducing irrigation technogogy,after infrastructure with the government doing their part.

Better tools, walk into a garden center and see the pleatroa of specific tools never seen, which can be developed from local material.. intermidai technology... I hoe machete and fork may be tradtional but ineffective.. ie hand held weeders , planters....

Stop looking at the US for models look at small succesful practices in Asia and adbapt.... Better irrigation.. On a small scale not gradiosuse ... Capruring runoff from roads by stabilising soils wiht silicates and carbonates or even plastic. Upgrading techniques and sharing the up grades. Same [censored] I did still happens..

Develop local seed stock, formalalised standad contracts that allow land owners to rent land to farmers so protect both. this happens alot people lending land to others.. not gradiose.. Information deciminated by radio.. Up grading extention service to something useful.... Reforestration done by making simple appeals proper.. Teach agricutrue properly, make people aware of the ne.... Use of compost to up grade soils... Stop using derivates of Choro pesticides and phosphates... I used to literally bath in lindane and deildrin only to discover they were bandded....Proper reserch.. We have developed African Star Grass, Red Pole, the Ugli, Tia maria.. expansion of the coffe industry out of the blue mountains east and west.... Market this prodcut as an alternative.... At 25 Steling for 400 g money to be made.. Better farming techniques for cofee... Expand the tobbaco industry to make high quality cigars... Use of small scale agroindustry ie bee keeping still happens on a tiny scale but it is lucrative. Examination of non traditional crops specifically for the tourism trade... Better marketing. More specific long term weater reports.. Constant advise...

Note nothing glamerous simple basic things,. What happens is glamerous announcments like the replanting of the citrus stock back in the 90's that only 40 % implimented... Think small local....

Shoot predial theives.. If you in mi feild after dark.. Mi cyan chap yu to death!!!!(ok thats a bit harsh but it happens and the police ignore it!!)

Jamaica's out-going Prime Minister PJ Pastterson said the last 14 years -his term in office- has been extremely challenging for the Caribbean and Jamaica. But he had set out to build a modern economy in Jamaica. "To survive you have to be able to compete. To chart its own course, a country has to be able to chart its own destiny."

Patterson said that was what led him to pull Jamaica out of "the lion's jaw of the IMF. Now the country has net international reserves of over US$2 Billion." Patterson also spoke of the social advances made under his administration, such as addressing HIV/AIDS.

"The party to which I belong, the PNP, is committed to education," said PM Patterson. He added that he is looking forward to having the time to write once he retires from public office. He is expected to step down as PM in the next few weeks.

</div></div>You only need the hospital when you get sick. just because you have to be admitted today, doe not mean the last time you were discharges you were not healthier. Hospitals are not homes you use it when you need it and leave it when you don't. The IMF is supposed to be a hospital for very sick economies.
Now whether it's treatments the give are appropriate is another story.
